NEWFA go back to the Top

Written by The North East Welsh FA, March 19, 2018

North East Wales hosted Central Wales in a UEFA Regions cup qualifying tie at Maes Tegid, Bala. In the reverse fixture both teams shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw, whilst NEWFA defeated North Wales Coast (NWCFA) 2-0 last time out.

NEWFA made the perfect start as central midfielder Sam Wainwright robbed Central Wales FA from their kick off, drove forward towards the box before teeing up Matty Williams who drove the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the area. Central Wales responded well to going behind despite NEWFA having the majority of possession. A ball in behind down the left hand side provided the visitors with a chance that was well blocked by captain George Thomas.

NEWFA soon doubled their advantage through Matty Williams with half an hour played. The Rhostyllen forward struck a superb long range free kick in to the top corner via the joint. Terry Pugh then saw his long range effort go narrowly wide before wingers Lewis Jones and James Haynes were denied by the opposition goalkeeper before half time.

NEWFA controlled the game after the restart with Matty Williams going close to completing his hattrick after good work from right back Rob Jones. With twenty minutes remaining Central grew in confidence and eventually got one back after neat work from their attacking midfield player allowed their striker to lift the ball over the onrushing Joe Makaruk. Minutes later their increasing pressure  was rewarded as they equalised through their striker with an emphatic header after NEWFA failed to deal with the second ball in to the box.

NEWFA pushed for a winner in the last ten minutes of the game and got their reward for patience and persistence as Lewis Jones fed Matty Williams just wide of the box and he caught the keeper out with another powerful left footed strike in at the near post. The win was sealed in the dying minutes of the game as Lewis Jones fed substitute Kyle Wilkes who cutely finished past the goalkeeper.

NEWFA travel to Conwy on 21st March to face NWCFA in a winner takes all tie to top the table in the Northern section.

Starting XI: Joe Makaruk, Rob Jones, George Thomas (C), Nick Manning, Ste Orsler, Sam Wainwright, Josh Jones, James Haynes, Terry Pugh, Lewis Jones, Matty Williams.

Subs: Rhys Peers, Jordan Dorrington, Ash Lewis, Kyle Wilkes.
